Fantasy Starter Ruled Out Before the Game? What to Do

Draft Guru Team·· 6 min read
A starter ruled out before their game is a fixable problem, right up until that game starts. Swap in a healthy bench player who fits the spot before kickoff, tip-off, puck drop or first pitch, and the spot still scores. Miss the window and it's locked with a zero in it.

Knowing what to do is the easy part. Being there when the news breaks is the hard part.

What "ruled out" actually means

A player who is ruled out will not play: listed Out, moved to injured reserve, suspended, or left on the game-day inactive list. Leave one in your lineup and that spot scores nothing.

Questionable and doubtful are different. Those players might still suit up, so that call stays yours.

The timing is the trap. NFL teams post their inactive lists about 90 minutes before kickoff, and in basketball and hockey a late scratch can come even closer to the start. The news tends to land when you're busy.

Everything you can do to save the spot happens inside this bar.

What to do when a starter is ruled out

You have until that player's game starts. Work through it in this order:

  1. Find a fit. A bench player who can play that spot. A flex spot widens the list.
  2. Check the clock. Their game can't have started, or they're locked too. A player on a bye, or with no game today in a daily sport, scores nothing either.
  3. Check their status. Don't swap one ruled-out player for another.
  4. Look at free agents if the bench is empty. If your league lets you add a player before that game starts, a healthy pickup beats a zero.

None of that is hard. It just has to happen inside the window, and the window is short.

Can't get to your phone?

Work shifts, weddings, flights, your kid's game. Every manager has a week where the news breaks and they can't look. A little planning covers most of it:

  • Set your lineup early, then check it again. Early beats never, and the second look catches the late news.
  • Keep a backup who plays later. A bench player whose game has already started can't come in, so one in a later game covers more of the day.
  • Know your league's rule before you need it. Find out now whether anyone is allowed to touch your lineup when you can't.

How leagues handle late scratches

There are three common ways a league deals with a starter ruled out while their manager is away:

Your lineup, your problemWhatever is in the spot at lock is what scores. Simple, and nobody argues about it afterward.
The commissioner steps inFair in theory. In practice, somebody always asks why their friend got rescued and they didn't.
A rule set ahead of timeManagers decide before the game what happens if a starter is ruled out, so nobody makes a call on game day.

The third is the one nobody fights about later, because it was decided before anyone got hurt. That's the idea behind emergency subs.

Why one ruled-out starter matters

Ruled-out starters aren't rare, and they cost seasons. A 2024 survey of 2,000 U.S. fantasy football players, run in early October, found:

69%

had already started a backup by early October.

30%

of managers who gave up on a season blamed injuries.

Starting a backup is normal. A zero in a spot you could have filled is the part that stings.

Where Draft Guru comes in

In a league hosted on Draft Guru, you can set that rule for your own team before anyone gets hurt. It's called emergency subs.

On My Team, pick a backup for any starter, or turn on "Cover any starter who's ruled out" for the whole lineup. If a covered starter is ruled out before their game starts, Guru starts your backup (or your best healthy bench player who fits, if you left it open) and sends you a heads-up. You can undo it until either player's game starts.

It's a rule you set, not a prediction. Guru doesn't guess who will play. It acts only on starters who are already ruled out.

No upgrade, and no cap on how many starters you cover. Every manager in a Draft Guru league gets it.

Your backup has to be able to play

A sub only works while the backup's game hasn't started. If your backup plays in the early game and your starter plays at night, a starter ruled out before the night game finds the backup already locked. So when you can, name a backup who plays at the same time as your starter, or later.

In basketball, hockey, baseball and the WNBA you set a lineup each day, so emergency subs work day by day too: the starter and the backup both need a game today that hasn't started. In football it's the week's lineup, so a backup on a bye, or whose game is already over, can't come in.

Which leagues get emergency subs

Emergency subs are for leagues hosted on Draft Guru: a league you start here and invite your friends to. In a hosted league, nothing happens until you set it up. Name a backup, or turn on "Cover any starter who's ruled out" on My Team.

If your league plays on ESPN, Yahoo, Sleeper or Fantrax, connect your team. Guru reads your roster and helps with lineups, waivers and trades, including the replacement when a starter is ruled out. You make the moves on your platform.

Quick answers

Does it swap questionable players?

No. Only starters who are already ruled out: Out, injured reserve, suspended or inactive.

Will it drop a bench player to pick up someone new?

No. It never drops a player or picks one up off the waiver wire. If no one on your bench can sub in, Guru lets you know so you can make the call.

Can I undo a swap?

Yes, until either player's game starts.

Does it cost extra?

No. Emergency subs are free on every plan. Compare plans.
